Historic Landscape Preservation Services
Massachusetts is blessed to be full of beautiful historic buildings, many creatively adapted to 21st century life. Often the landscape just outside these buildings has been overlooked or perhaps neglected. It is certainly possible to revive such landscapes and to align them with the period of a historic home.
Archival research and documentation
The first step in a preservation program is to delve into local records that give specific details about past family ownership, occupation, milieu and possibly even original plans for the property. Many owners already have access to such information which can be shared with us as a baseline for a new design or renovation plan.
Choose plants appropriate for the period of house
Drawing on the work of other landscape historians, period-inspired plants can be selected to convey the "look of place" your residence deserves. In some cases, historic varieties are still available in today's marketplace. We will recommend removal of plants not appropriate to the house, which often can be transplanted to outlying beds.
Preserve mature plantings
Established plants lend an air of stability and permanence to the garden. Trees, in particular, have significant character and are worthy of preservation for future generations. Working with our plant health care specialist, we will devise a program to enhance your prized plantings. Our skilled arborists can assist with rejuvenation pruning of worthy but overgrown specimens.
